Christmas is around the corner. Next thing you know, Christmas is going to sneak up on us.

Christmas is my favorite time of the year. It’s sparkly, festive, and everything in between. From gifts to the celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth, Christmas is just the best time of the year. That’s in my opinion.

Who doesn’t like singing Christmas songs? Who doesn’t like caroling or decorating their house or workplace with lights, Christmas tree and ornaments, displays, etc?

All the people I know love Christmas.

There’s one thing that many people don’t like, that is, spending.

Christmas may be the best season of the year but it sure is one of the most expensive seasons.

You can easily drop thousands of dollars in one month between gifts, decorations, and food. Seriously, I know a couple of people who spend at least $2,000 every Christmas.

Ouch! That’s a lot of money.

Having said all these, it doesn’t mean that Christmas should always be expensive. There are so many ways you can save money during Christmas. You can buy the things you need for you, your family, and your loved ones without shelling out a ton of money.

You can be with your loved ones and have fun without shelling a ton of money in the process.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks

For a couple of years now, my wife and I have been spending money for Christmas. Having said that, we don’t spend a lot of all. We have been crafty, clever, and things in between to make sure we stretch out our Christmas budget.

Here are some of the Christmas Money Saving Hacks that can or will help you reduce your season expenses this Christmas.

1. Take advantage of sales after Thanksgiving.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: Very High

The day after Thanksgiving officially and unofficially starts Christmas season.

Because a lot of products will be on sale, buy products during that time.

In addition, because the dishes or meals served on Thanksgiving and Christmas days are pretty much the same (i.e. turkey and pumpkin desserts), you might as well get the stuff on sale if you have space to store them.

Of course, the same thing applies to gadgets and other non-food items.

Buying stuff ahead of time will tremendously save you a ton of money. Remember, things get more expensive as the days get closer to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

If you are shopping online after Thanksgiving day, use Gumdrop so you don’t have to find coupons to get the lowest possible prices for already-reduced prices. Gumdrop will do that for you.

My wife and I saved over $150 because of the coupons Gumdrop found.

Pro tip: Combine the power of EbatesGumdrop, and Paribus and you are on your way to saving a ton of money even when it’s the day after Thanksgiving.

2. Organize your expenses and get paid doing that.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: Very High

During Christmas season one thing for sure is going to happen, that is, you’ll see a lot of expenses left and right.

Sometimes, you don’t have time to organize your expenses. Because you don’t organize these, you tend to spend more and not have a control of your expenses during Christmas time.

Why not have someone organize your expenses and get paid in return? Say what?

You read it right. You let this entity organize your expenses and it will pay you in return.

That’s what Spentapp is about. I love it and my wife and I have been using it since we were in Las Vegas 4 years ago.

We use it and it is magical.  It automatically organizes our expenses and eventually recommends financial decisions for us for FREE. Plus, we get cash for spending money.

Yes, when we spend money, we get money from Spentapp.

Frankly speaking, with Spentapp’s help, we were able to make great decisions that ultimately helped us pay off our $40K debt and saved $70K all in 2.5 years. Up to now, we use it even when our finances are all in order.

It never hurts to get a second opinion on financial decisions especially if it’s FREE.

If you are buying a lot of things this season and simply need help in organizing your expenses or improve your finances and get paid too, click here to try Spentapp for FREE and see the great wonders it brings.

3. Use grocery items as gifts.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: Very High

When I say groceries, I mean products that don’t easily get spoiled like personal care items.

To give valuable gifts means to give things others can use. That’s what my mom and dad taught me growing up. It means that being practical is not a bad thing to do when gifting someone.

If you want to save boatloads of money on Christmas gifts, you can always give grocery items.

You wait for sales, look for clearance items, and use coupons to get additional discounts on those products. You just have to make sure you buy what those gift receivers need.

You can always put those groceries in nice-looking paper bags to make the gifts look more presentable.

There are grocery shopping apps to help you save and make money.

My wife and I have earned over $1,400  in almost 2 years using these shopping apps. These include Saving Star and Ibotta, which are, by far, my family’s favorite shopping apps. Check out this link for the list.

If you try Ibotta app, you will receive $10 instantly. Yes, you’ll receive the $10 sign-up bonus when you redeem your first brand name rebate within 7 days of account registration.

4. Use Qapital.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: Very High

The most difficult part in making a Christmas budget work is actually putting or setting aside money for Christmas. I know you’ll agree with me on that statement.

If you want to set aside a Christmas budget but do not have the time or you think you cannot do it, your best bet is to use what we’ve been using and the one that has helped us saved more than $900 this year, that is, Qapital.

It’s a FREE personal finance app that lets you set a goal and help you achieve it. It’s super easy to use and it works like magic.

It helps you save money by rounding your purchases and putting it towards your goal automatically.

For example, if you buy a coffee that costs $2.75, Qapital will round it up to $3.00, which you’ll see in your statement. The 25 cents difference would then be credited to your savings goal.

If you have a set budget per expense category and you go under budget, Qapital will take the difference between your actual expenses and budget and put it into your savings goal. Cha ching! Automatic saving.

We personally use Qapital to save money for things we want without us having to painstakingly set aside money for those wants. Click here to start saving with Qapital without you knowing it.

5. Check for price updates.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: High

Christmas is the season of never-ending fluctuating prices. One day you may see the product you bought at 30% discount. Some other days, you may see it at 50% discount.

If you want to save some money, you need to look out for these price fluctuations. Make it one of your priorities.

Some brick and mortar stores will adjust the prices and give you back the difference. If it’s online, I highly suggest you use Paribus as it will automatically request reimbursement for price difference on your behalf.

Some credit cards  will do the same thing. You just can’t get the price difference from the stores and the credit cards at the same time.

I bought a computer a couple weeks ago and found that the price went down a week after I bought it. I called my credit card company and asked for price difference.

What did I get? I got the price difference without any problem.

6. Get automatic cash back.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: Very High

When you’re on a tight budget, any saving is great even when it’s only a few cents.

If you ever plan on buying gifts online, make sure to activate Paribus. Whether you buy from Amazon or somewhere else, you’ll save a ton of money with Paribus.

It’s one of the things you need to save money without actually doing anything. All you need to do is download and activate Paribus (through your email and it’s one time activation) and you are on your way to saving money.

The benefit of Paribus comes in when the prices of the products you purchased drop.

Paribus will request reimbursement for the difference between the price you paid and the new lower price. The reimbursement magic applies to any purchases you make. Paribus is FREE and won’t take any cut from your savings.

That reimbursement will go straight to your pocket. It is that simple.

As a fact, my wife and I have received at least $40 back in just 3 weeks because of Paribus.

Because people will go online to do their shopping, it’s best to get Paribus before the Christmas shopping season starts.

Just so you know, you can use Paribus any season but you’ll likely get more savings when you use this during Christmas season. Why? It’s because you are likely to spend more during this season than any other seasons.

Create a Paribus account here and start getting money back with no effort.

7. Sublet your home or apartment.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: Medium

A lot of us will travel during the Christmas season to be with our loved ones.

If you are ok with subletting your apartment or your home for extra income during the holidays, do so. Checkout Airbnb, a worldwide network that makes hosting guests easy and safe at the same time.

This is a good idea especially if you are living in a tourist destination area or a place where people like to spend their holidays.

The money you earn from subletting can offset some of the Christmas expenses you may have.

Boost your income with ease and security. When you share your space on Airbnb, you’re covered by our $1 Million Host Guarantee. Start your listing now!

8. Buy discounted discount gift cards.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: High

That’s not a typographical error.

If you cannot figure out what to buy for your loved ones but you know their favorite stores, places to shop, among others, then, gift cards are the best substitutes to traditional gifts. You can buy gift cards for $5, $10, $15, and so on.

This does not mean you need to buy gift cards at full price.

Whenever I buy them, I always follow these two steps:

  1. Visit websites for discounted gift cards.
  2. Use credit cards that pay points, cash back, and other rewards to purchase gift cards.

When you combine these two steps, you can certainly buy gift cards at big discounts.

I go to the following websites to buy my gift cards either for my family to save a ton of money or those who I will give presents to. I use these gift cards for gas, groceries, and other necessities.

  • Raise.com (Get $5 when you sign up through this link)
  • Cardpool.com (Buy gift cards for up to 35% off or sell yours for up to 92% cash back. Plus, you will get $5 when you sign up through this link)
  • Restaurant.com (My wife uses restaurant.com when we dine out. I say, you never have to pay full price when you use this site)

9. Use shopping reward websites.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: Very High

Another hack to save you a couple of dollars or more is to use shopping reward sites like Ebates and Swagbucks.

The way these sites work is that you get a % back when you buy something from a store.

Before you get that cash back, you need to access the retailer’s online store through a link from those reward sites.

For example, if you want to go to Walmart, you go to these reward sites and search for Walmart.

Once you see Walmart and click that link, you will get re-directed to the Walmart site. Once you’re done shopping at Walmart, you’ll earn cash back, which is based on the % cash back stated on the cash back site.

This year alone, my wife and I made over $200 in cash back rewards.

Here are some of the cash back sites I highly recommend:

10. Check for price updates.

11. Re-gift unused gifts.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: Medium

Is it really ok to re-gift?

It may look improper to do just that but it’s not ok either if you’re not going to use the gifts you received last holiday or during important occasions.

So, when is a gift ok to be re-gifted? I use this checklist to ensure I don’t offend the person who gave me the gift and the next person to receive it will find it more valuable than I did or do.

  1. The gift was not handmade just for you. This means that don’t give the gift to others if it is specifically made just for you.
  2. The receiver of the gift would find (more) value in it.
  3. You think the gift can be better used by other people.

12. Ship gifts ahead of time and preferably do flat-rate shipping.

A lot of us have friends and family who are nowhere close to where we live.

A lot of times, we send them gifts through traditional means (i.e. postal mail).

If you are shipping products to your loved ones, make sure to ship them ahead of time. You don’t want to send gifts close to the Christmas Eve or Day. You’ll likely have to pay additional costs to ensure the gifts get to their destinations on time.

If you’ve mailed gifts close to the Christmas day before, chances are you paid for overnight delivery or something similar to it. It’s best if you take an extra effort to get everything done early.

After all, you’ll be happier and less stressed knowing that you’ve got every single gift you need before the holiday rush kicks in.

13. Buy a real Christmas tree closer to the Christmas Eve.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: Medium

While you are tempted to buy a Christmas tree right away when Christmas season hits, resist that temptation.

Chances are, the cost of the tree will be high.

Wait for a couple of weeks or wait until a couple of days before the big day. Chances of you getting a good, deep-discounted price through haggling is higher.

Or you can always buy a fake Christmas tree, which will save you a ton of money in the long run. Be sure to buy one after the Christmas season since Christmas stuff goes on sale or clearance right after the Christmas day.

14. Make your own Christmas party a potluck.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: Very High

If you like hosting a Christmas party, change it a bit this year.

You can always tell people that your party will be a potluck party. It may sound strange but come to think of it.

When you invite people to a party, they usually or almost always bring some dish, beverage, or something else.

So, when you want to save money but still want to host a party, then, a potluck party is the route to go.

15. Watch classic movies.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: High

Once the cooking, eating, cleaning, and opening of presents are done, my family goes to the living room, get into our position (i.e. take a seat), and watch our favorite Christmas movies.

Some of us, though, will just stay in the dining room and just chat for countless hours.

But for those of us who go straight to the living room, we watch our favorite movies.

We always love to watch The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Elf, and Home Alone 1 and 2. Those are staples in my family and we never get tired of watching them.

You do not have to spend money to watch your favorite movies.

If you have Netflix and Hulu, good for you because there are so many great shows in there. If you do not have either of two, don’t worry and do not spend a lot of money to go to theaters. TV networks do show Christmas movies, too.

Plus, you can always run to the small kiosk, that is, Redbox to get some movies.

16. Book your flight as early as possible.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: Very High

You probably know this already, that is, the closer the date is to your departure, the more expensive the airfare is especially during big holidays like Christmas.

Book your flight ahead of time.

According to Travelocity, airfare prices are the lowest during the first week of November.

My family uses Kiwi to make sure we get the best airfare from my departure airport and Airfarewatchdog to see if there are other airports we can fly from that could save us more money.

17. Cook and bake.

Christmas Money Saving Hacks Effectiveness: Very High

Christmas would not be Christmas without good food and good company.

Cooking and baking are ways you can interact with your loved ones.

Just because you are bad in either of the two doesn’t mean you can’t help out. If you are that bad, you can help with getting all the ingredients on the table, chopping the vegetables, cleaning the stove, etc.

Kitchen has always been a place where everybody can be loud. At least, in my family, the kitchen is always where we talk a lot.

We spend a lot more time in the kitchen than in our living and dining rooms.

If you have a big family like ours, you will spend a whole lot of time cooking and baking. So, why not make the most out of the time you guys have in the kitchen? Get your apron on and have fun with cooking and baking.

Your kitchen will look like a mess, but I’m quite sure you will have a good time when you’re working together with your loved ones to make your Christmas meal or feast.
